Rocks turn the Corner
2010-07-24
The Victoria Shamrocks travelled to the Copeland Arena tonight to face a tough Burnaby Lakers squad. No doubt the memory of the less than stellar two-game road trip last weekend was still fresh in their minds. With first place still within reach, the Rocks needed to bring their A game while still missing a few important parts from their lineup. The Lakers were also looking to keep a playoff spot within reach, raising the stakes and making tonight’s match one that fans were anticipating.
The Rocks started fast and kept up the pace, but ran directly into the high-quality work being produced by Drew Dickie in the Burnaby net. The Rocks outshot the Lakers 20 to 10 in the first period but still found themselves on the short end of a 2 to 1 scoreline. The Rocks did open the scoring with Ryan Benesch netting his first, assisted by Kory Kowalyk at 7:42. The Lakers Mike Brascia and Trevor Moore on a power play sent the home team to the room with the narrow one goal lead. There were five minor penalties in the period, three to the Lakers.

Rocks Get Adanac Monkey Off Back
2010-07-10
After losing 6 of the last 7 games they played against the Coquitlam Adanacs, the Victoria Shamrocks, in a game they felt they MUST win, finally did so, handing the visitors a 13-10 defeat Friday at Bear Mountain.
It was hot outside, hot inside and in the first period, the Shamrocks were red hot as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first 20 minutes, led 11-2 after 2 and cooled off significantly in period 3, being outscored 8-2.

Shoot Out on Poirier
2010-07-04
Coquitlam lacrosse fans with reasonably long memories anticipate a Saturday night visit from the Victoria Shamrocks. And, many remember too many nights where the best from the Adanacs’ bench was not good enough for the win. Twice now, this season, the Adanacs bench has had the right stuff on Poirier.
The Rocks looked focused in the warm up, no doubt remembering the one-goal loss to the Adanacs on June 19. In that game, Victoria scored first before the Adanacs went on a four-goal run. In last nights’ game, the A’s stated the game with a four-goal run, including a pair from ex-junior Shamrock Cory Conway. The Rocks woke up and responded with goals from Matt Lyons and Mike Pires. However, the A’s matched those two goals with two more of their own, before Jeff Shattler scored on a power play. The teams went to the room for the first break with the A’s leading 6 to 3.

Shamrocks Chalk Up Another (but it wasn’t easy)
2010-07-03
I guess you could say there’s parity in the WLA when there are only 8 points separating top and bottom and any team seems able to defeat any other on a given night. Friday night at Bear Mountain Arena it was the Shamrocks’ turn as they came from behind to defeat the visiting Maple Ridge Burrards 14-12.

Great Scott(s) – Rocks Miss an Opportunity
2010-06-12
The Victoria Shamrocks arrived at the Copeland Arena a little late, and that often means a little trouble getting prepared for the game. But, the delay did not stop the Rocks from getting out of the gate quickly, and putting the Lakers on their back heel early. Unfortunately, the Rocks ran into two hot Scotts; a hot Scott Lowe in the Burnaby net and the hot stick of Laker newcomer Scott Tinning. The result was disappointing for the Island crew.
The Rocks exploded onto the score sheet early, blitzing the Burnaby net with three goals by the 2:11 mark. Pires, Shattler and Dylan Llord were the marksmen. The Lakers did not wilt, getting one back at 2:55. A bit of a see saw ensued, with the Rocks keeping up the pressure and restoring the three-goal lead at 7:42, with Benesch doing the honours. However, the Lakers responded again tallying at 11:12. That was the end of the scoring in the first period, with Victoria leading 4 to 2, and the shots on goal tied at 13. It was anyone’s game at this point.

T’Men Go Down to Rocks
2010-06-05
The island rivalry was well-hyped and there was a sell-out crowd of 2791 on hand at Bear Mountain Arena Friday to witness the WLA game between the Victoria Shamrocks and the Nanaimo Timbermen. If you like lots of goals, you’d have been a happy camper as the teams combined for 12 in the first period and the Shamrocks took a 15-10 victory against the visiting Timbermen.
It was certainly a tough night for goaltenders’ goals-against-average as the Shamrocks’ Nick Patterson suited up for his second game in two nights, with Matt King his adversary at the Nanaimo end of the floor.

Rocks Take First Place
2010-06-04
Thursday June 3rd was Seats for Soldiers night at venerable Queen’s Park in New Westminster, with free admission for anyone in uniform. The evening included a half hour of military displays with both a brass band, a pipe band and a colour guard from the Royal Westminster Regiment in ceremonies before the game. With Canadian troops still in harms way overseas, the ceremonies were both celebratory and poignant. It was an evening to say thanks to the folks, past or present, who served Canada in uniform. Lest we forget.
For this game, the host New Westminster Salmonbellies turned out wearing commemorative camouflage jerseys to face the visiting Victoria Shamrocks in their road green. While both teams joined the crowd saying thanks to those who put their lives on the line, that shared sentiment ended with the opening whistle. And, in a Paul Newman-like Slapshot pre-game scenario, anyone in the wired world was aware of tweets announcing that the Salmonbellies were going after the Shamrocks Captain Nick Inch. No one was surprised when the Bellies Kyle Ross slashed Inch immediately after the opening face-off. Each player sat for seven minutes and those scoring the bout in the crowd gave the decision to Inch.
