Shoot Out on Poirier

2010-07-04

In the second period, the red lights lit up with great frequency.  The teams combined for 13 goals in the middle frame.  Great fun for the fans, but a nightmare for the goalies and coaches.  The Rocks netted 7 of the 13 to win the period.  But, the A's still went to the room with a two-goal lead. The Rocks needed to start fast in the third and keep up the pressure.  What the scoreline shows is that while the Rocks could score goals, so could the A's.  The Rocks did score four of the last five goals including a pair in the last minute.  But, an empty netter scored by Bruce Murray for the A's 16th goal, was the difference.  (I promised Bruce Murrays Dad that I would record Bruce's goal as a coast to coaster.) The final score was 16 to 15 for the A's. The Rocks outshot the A's 53 to 42, including 21 to 13 in the third period, but Brandon Atherton went the distance in the A's net to record another one-goal win over the Rocks.  The loss leaves the Rocks at 18 points, and tied with New West for first place.  New West holds a game in hand. The Rocks next game offers a chance for retribution, as the A's pay a visit to Bear Mountain next Friday, July 9th.  This the last regular season match-up between these two rivals.  Game time is 7:45.
