Shamrocks Pull Away in Third to Topple Timbermen

After forty minutes of back-and-forth lacrosse, the Victoria Shamrocks found another gear in the third period Saturday night in Nanaimo, scoring five unanswered goals to defeat the Nanaimo Timbermen 13-10 in the first of three meetings of the Island rivals this season.

The teams traded goals through the first two periods, with no team ever having more than a one-goal lead or a two-goal run through forty minutes of play, sending the game into the third period with a narrow Nanaimo lead of 9-8.

Then the Shamrocks turned it on.

After giving up a goal to Nanaimo’s Jake Mickelson, giving them the first multi-goal lead of the game, the Shamrocks’ Zach Manns, Mathieu Gautier, Eli McLaughlin, and Patrick Dodds all quickly found the back of the net, giving Victoria the lead of 12-10. Then in last minute of the period, as Nanaimo pulled goaltender Colby Bowman in favour of the extra attacker, Victoria regained possession and Jacob Hickey was able to get one into the empty net to give Victoria the final word.

Three stars for the game were awarded to Marshal King with three goals, Andrew Bowman with two goals and two assists for Nanaimo, and first star of the game to Victoria’s Eli McLaughlin making his season debut with four goals and an assist.

The Shamrocks will be back in action Friday, June 12th back at The Q Centre in Colwood as hosts to the visiting Maple Ridge Burrards. Tickets are still available from the team store or at VictoriaShamrocks.com.
